Gulf Hagas

About This Waterfall

Gulf Hagas is known as the "Grand Canyon of Maine," a dramatic three-mile-long slate gorge where the West Branch of the Pleasant River tumbles through a series of waterfalls, cascades, and deep pools carved 130 feet into the ancient bedrock. The gorge contains five major waterfalls including Screw Auger Falls, Buttermilk Falls, Billings Falls, Stair Falls, and The Jaws, each separated by stretches of churning whitewater and eerily calm dark pools. The slate walls display twisted folds and fractures that tell a story of immense geological forces.

The Rim Trail along the edge of the gorge is a moderately challenging 8.2-mile loop that requires fording the Pleasant River at the start — ankle to knee deep depending on water levels. The trail follows the gorge rim through old-growth forest, with numerous spur trails descending to viewpoints at each major waterfall and swimming hole. The terrain is rugged with exposed roots, rocky sections, and some scrambling required at the viewpoints. Plan for a full day — this is not a quick waterfall stop.

Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, with June providing high water levels and lush green forest. Fall foliage along the gorge is extraordinary. Access requires passing through the Ki-Jo Mary Multiple Use Forest, which charges a day-use fee at the gatehouse. The nearest services are in Brownville Junction, about 20 miles south. This is remote Maine backcountry — come prepared with map, water, food, and bug spray.
