Yahoo Falls
McCreary County, Kentucky
About This Waterfall
Yahoo Falls is the tallest waterfall in Kentucky at 113 feet, with water dropping over an enormous sandstone overhang in the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. The massive rock shelter behind the falls is one of the largest in the region, stretching back dozens of feet. The combination of the tall, narrow falls and the cathedral-like rock shelter creates one of the most dramatic natural settings in the state.
The 1-mile moderate trail from the Yahoo Falls Scenic Area leads to overlooks both above and below the falls. The upper trail provides a bird's-eye view, while the lower trail takes visitors behind the massive rock overhang at the base. The rock shelter shows evidence of Native American habitation and provides welcome shade.
The falls are seasonal and flow best during winter and spring. Summer can see the falls reduced to a trickle. The Big South Fork area offers additional hiking, paddling, and scenic opportunities. Fall color in the mixed hardwood forest is excellent in mid to late October.
