Bad Branch Falls
Letcher County, Kentucky
About This Waterfall
Bad Branch Falls is a 60-foot waterfall in the Bad Branch State Nature Preserve, where Bad Branch creek drops over a sandstone ledge into a rocky gorge surrounded by old-growth forest in the mountains of Letcher County. The falls are set in one of the most ecologically significant preserves in Kentucky, with rare plant communities and old-growth timber on the 2,639-acre property.
The mile-long trail to the falls follows Bad Branch creek through dense forest, with moderate difficulty due to rock scrambling and small ledge crossings. The trail passes through hemlock and rhododendron corridors before opening up to the falls viewpoint. An optional High Rock Loop Trail extends the hike with stunning cliff-top views.
The falls are best during winter and spring when rainfall is highest. The remote location in the mountains of eastern Kentucky means few visitors even on busy weekends. The preserve is managed by the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission for its outstanding biological diversity.
