Upper Mesa Falls
Fremont County, Idaho
About This Waterfall
Upper Mesa Falls crashes 114 feet over a wide basalt ledge in the Henrys Fork canyon, the entire river compressed into a violent curtain of whitewater that sends tremors through the viewing platform. This is one of the last undammed, fully natural waterfalls on a major Idaho river — the Henrys Fork flows free here as it has for millennia, with no hydroelectric infrastructure altering the spectacle. The canyon walls of dark volcanic rock frame the cascade in a primeval setting.
A short trail from the parking area leads to a series of viewing platforms at canyon rim level, with the main overlook providing a broadside view of the full cascade. A visitors center at the trailhead covers the geology and natural history of the Henrys Fork. The Mesa Falls Nature Trail continues 2 miles downstream to Lower Mesa Falls, a 65-foot cascade that is less visited but equally scenic.
Spring and early summer from May through July deliver peak water volume. The Mesa Falls Scenic Byway connecting Ashton to the falls is a beautiful drive through forests and farmland with views of the Teton Range. A $5 parking fee applies at the Upper Mesa Falls site. The platforms are wheelchair-accessible.
