Shoshone Falls
Twin Falls County, Idaho
About This Waterfall
Shoshone Falls earns its nickname — the Niagara of the West — with a thundering 212-foot plunge that is actually 36 feet taller than its eastern counterpart. The Snake River spreads 900 feet wide before tipping over a horseshoe-shaped basalt rim, the cascade shattering into a churning cauldron that sends mist hundreds of feet into the air. The scale is genuinely jaw-dropping: this is one of the largest natural waterfalls in the United States, set against the stark beauty of the Snake River Canyon.
The falls are accessed via Shoshone Falls Park in Twin Falls, with paved paths leading to multiple overlooks along the canyon rim. A stairway descends to a lower platform for a closer perspective. The park includes a playground, picnic areas, swimming area, and boat ramp, making it a full day destination. A kayak put-in upstream allows paddlers to approach the falls from river level.
Peak flow arrives in April and May when irrigation releases and snowmelt combine to push maximum water over the rim. By midsummer, irrigation diversions reduce the falls to a fraction of their spring glory — timing your visit is critical. A $5 per vehicle entry fee applies year-round. The overlooks are wheelchair-accessible.
Trail Information
Warning: Canyon rim has steep dropoffs — stay behind railings. Water flow varies dramatically by season due to irrigation diversions. Falls can be a trickle by late summer.
