Jump Creek Falls

Owyhee County, Idaho

Jump Creek Falls

About This Waterfall

Jump Creek Falls drops 60 feet in a narrow plunge through a red-rock canyon that looks transplanted from the desert Southwest. The rhyolite canyon walls glow orange and rust in afternoon light, creating a striking color contrast with the white cascade and the green vegetation clinging to the moist rock face. The pool at the base is deep enough for swimming and cold enough to shock the breath out of you — a welcome sensation in the Owyhee Desert heat.

The hike is a flat, easy 0.3-mile walk from the parking area through the canyon bottom to the falls, following Jump Creek as it meanders between the narrow rock walls. The trail crosses the creek a few times on rocks, and the final approach may require wading depending on water levels. The entire outing takes 30 minutes or less, making it one of the most rewarding short waterfall hikes in Idaho.

The falls flow year-round but are most impressive from March through June during spring runoff. Summer temperatures in the Owyhee Desert can exceed 100 degrees — the shaded canyon and cold pool offer welcome relief. The canyon is managed by the BLM with no entrance fee. The approach road is gravel but passable for most vehicles.
