Wailua Falls
Kauai County, Hawaii
About This Waterfall
Wailua Falls is a stunning 173-foot twin plunge on the South Fork of the Wailua River, where two parallel streams of water drop side by side into a deep, clear pool surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. The falls gained fame as the opening shot of the television series Fantasy Island, and in person they live up to the fantasy — the twin streams, the verdant cliff face, and the mist rising from the plunge pool create a scene of pure tropical paradise. After heavy rains, the two streams merge into one massive curtain.
The falls are primarily a drive-up viewpoint — a scenic overlook at the end of Maalo Road provides a stunning perspective from the top of the falls looking down into the pool below. There is no official trail to the base, and the county of Kauai strongly advises against attempting the steep, muddy scramble that some visitors take. The clifftop viewpoint is fenced and provides excellent photographic angles, especially in morning light.
Located just 3 miles north of Lihue off Highway 580, Wailua Falls is one of the easiest waterfalls to visit on Kauai and a popular first stop for visitors arriving at the airport. The falls run year-round but are most impressive during the rainy season (November through March). Sunrise and morning light create the best photographic conditions. Free access and parking.
