Uluwehi Falls
Kauai County, Hawaii
About This Waterfall
Uluwehi Falls — better known as Secret Falls — is a 120-foot cascade hidden in the lush interior of the Wailua River Valley on Kauai, accessible only by kayaking upriver and then hiking through dense tropical jungle. The falls drop into a deep, swimmable pool surrounded by towering ferns, hanging vines, and moss-covered rocks, creating an intimate tropical grotto that feels like a scene from a lost world. The combination of the paddle-and-hike approach and the hidden setting earns the waterfall its secretive nickname.
The adventure begins with a 2-mile kayak paddle up the Wailua River — Hawaii's only navigable river — from the marina near Highway 56. After beaching the kayak at a marked pull-out, a 1-mile jungle trail winds through the valley floor, crossing the stream multiple times before arriving at the falls. The total round-trip covers about 6 miles between kayaking and hiking, taking 4-5 hours. Most visitors opt for a guided kayak tour, though independent rentals are available.
This is one of Kauai's most popular outdoor adventures, so expect company at the falls, especially mid-morning when tour groups arrive. Start your paddle early (8 AM) for the best chance at solitude. The stream crossings can be treacherous after heavy rain — check conditions before going. Bring water shoes, a dry bag for your camera, and waterproof sunscreen.
