Rainbow Falls
Hawaii County, Hawaii
About This Waterfall
Rainbow Falls is an 80-foot wide plunge where the Wailuku River — Hawaii's longest — pours over a basalt ledge into a large circular pool framed by mango trees, banyan roots, and tropical vegetation. The falls are almost 100 feet in diameter, creating a broad curtain of water that on sunny mornings produces the vivid rainbows that give the falls their name. Behind the falls lies a cave that Hawaiian legend says was home to Hina, mother of the demigod Maui.
The viewpoint is reached via a very short walk from the parking lot — less than 100 yards on a paved path — making Rainbow Falls one of the most effortless waterfall visits in the state. A second trail climbs to an upper lookout above the falls among massive banyan trees with aerial roots that create a natural cathedral. The entire visit takes just 15-20 minutes, though the beauty of the setting invites lingering.
Located in Wailuku River State Park just 1.5 miles from downtown Hilo, Rainbow Falls is a must-stop for any Big Island visitor. Come between 9-10 AM when the sun angle creates the most vivid rainbows in the mist. The falls run year-round but are most impressive after rain, which is frequent on Hilo's windward coast. Free admission and parking.
