Manoa Falls
Honolulu County, Hawaii
About This Waterfall
Manoa Falls is a 150-foot horsetail cascade that slides down a moss-covered cliff face at the back of Manoa Valley, just minutes from downtown Honolulu. The water clings to the rock as it descends through layers of tropical ferns, ginger, and heliconia, creating a lush green curtain that seems to belong in a primeval jungle rather than steps from a major city. The perpetual mist at the base keeps the surrounding forest floor impossibly green, supporting one of the most intact native Hawaiian forest ecosystems on Oahu.
The 1.6-mile round-trip trail climbs gently through a canopy of eucalyptus, bamboo, and native ohia trees, with the path becoming progressively muddier as it approaches the falls. The last quarter mile is typically muddy regardless of weather — waterproof shoes or sandals with grip are essential. The trail ends at a viewing area at the base of the falls. Swimming in the pool is discouraged due to leptospirosis risk in the water.
As the most accessible waterfall hike in Honolulu, Manoa Falls draws crowds throughout the day. Visit early morning for the best light and fewest people. The trail is open year-round and the falls run consistently thanks to Manoa Valley's frequent rainfall — it's one of the wettest spots in Oahu. Parking at the trailhead costs $7.
