Hanakapiai Falls

About This Waterfall

Hanakapiai Falls is a towering 300-foot cascade tucked deep in a valley on Kauai's legendary Na Pali Coast, dropping from a sheer cliff into a boulder-rimmed pool surrounded by some of the most dramatic tropical scenery on earth. The waterfall is the culmination of one of Hawaii's most rewarding and challenging day hikes — a journey through coastal cliffs, lush valleys, and river crossings that builds to a crescendo when the falls finally appear through the jungle canopy. The amphitheater of green cliffs surrounding the falls amplifies every sound into an immersive natural surround.

The 8-mile round-trip hike begins at Ke'e Beach and follows the famous Kalalau Trail for 2 miles along the Na Pali cliffs to Hanakapiai Beach, then turns inland for another 2 miles up the Hanakapiai Valley to the falls. The trail gains approximately 760 feet from beach to falls, crossing the stream multiple times on slippery rocks and roots. The coastal section features stunning ocean views, while the valley section plunges into dense tropical jungle.

A permit is required to access Haena State Park and the Kalalau Trail — reserve well in advance as permits sell out quickly, especially in summer. The trail is dangerous in high water and has claimed multiple lives at the beach and river crossings. Start early to allow 5-7 hours for the full round trip. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip and bring plenty of water.
