Silver Cascade Falls
San Juan County, Colorado
About This Waterfall
Silver Cascade Falls drops 75 feet in a series of polished granite steps in Mineral Creek Canyon south of Ouray, the cascade spreading and narrowing as it navigates the terraced rock face. The mineral-stained granite shifts from pale silver to rusty orange, giving the falls their name and a distinctive visual character. During peak runoff, the water fills every ledge and gap, transforming the staircase into a continuous sheet of churning whitewater.
The falls are visible from the Million Dollar Highway (US-550) between Ouray and Silverton, making this one of the easiest waterfall viewpoints in the San Juan Mountains. A small pulloff allows quick stops, though the best views require a short scramble down to creek level. The drive itself — one of America's most scenic mountain highways — is reason enough to make the trip.
Peak flow from May through June coincides with the opening of Red Mountain Pass for the season. Fall colors in late September add golden aspens to the already vivid landscape. Use extreme caution pulling off the narrow highway, and watch for commercial vehicles on the tight curves.
Trail Information
Warning: Pulloff is narrow — use extreme caution when parking along US-550. Scramble to creek level involves loose rock. Highway is closed in winter.
