North Clear Creek Falls

North Clear Creek Falls crashes 100 feet over a dark volcanic ledge into a rugged canyon carved from ancient ash flows, sending up a perpetual cloud of mist that hangs in the thin mountain air at 9,500 feet elevation. The waterfall is wide and powerful, spreading across the entire cliff face during peak runoff, with the rust-colored volcanic rock providing a dramatic contrast to the white water. The surrounding high plateau of the Silver Thread Scenic Byway adds a sense of remote grandeur.

Access could not be easier: a short paved path from the parking area leads to a fenced overlook directly across from the falls. The viewpoint is wheelchair-accessible and offers an unobstructed panorama of the full cascade and the canyon below. For a closer look, an unmaintained trail descends steeply to the canyon floor, but most visitors are satisfied with the overlook.

The falls are most impressive from late May through July when snowmelt from the surrounding 12,000-foot peaks feeds the creek at full capacity. The scenic byway between Lake City and Creede is one of Colorado's most beautiful drives, making this an essential roadside stop. Picnic tables and restrooms are available at the overlook.
