Fish Creek Falls
Routt County, Colorado
About This Waterfall
Fish Creek Falls drops 283 feet in a single dramatic plunge through a lush alpine canyon just minutes from downtown Steamboat Springs. The sheer volume of water during spring runoff creates a thundering curtain of whitewater that generates a cool mist felt from the viewing bridge below. Surrounding the falls, a dense forest of spruce and aspen frames the cascade in deep greens that shift to blazing gold each autumn.
A quarter-mile paved path leads from the parking area to a footbridge with a direct view of the lower falls — one of the most accessible major waterfalls in Colorado. For a closer experience, a moderate half-mile trail continues to the base of the falls. Ambitious hikers can follow the Fish Creek Falls Trail another 4 miles to the upper falls and Long Lake, climbing through wildflower meadows and old-growth forest.
Peak flow arrives in late May and June when snowmelt from the Flat Tops Wilderness feeds the creek at maximum volume. The lower viewpoint is open year-round, and winter transforms the falls into a towering column of blue ice popular with climbers. Parking fills early on summer weekends — arrive before 9 AM.
Trail Information
Warning: Trail to the base can be slippery when wet. Upper trail is steep and rocky. Ice climbing in winter requires proper gear and experience.
