Whiskeytown Falls

About This Waterfall

Whiskeytown Falls is a stunning 220-foot three-tiered cascade and the tallest waterfall in Whiskeytown National Recreation Area. Remarkably, this waterfall was essentially unknown to the public until 2004, when it was rediscovered by park staff during a mapping project. The three distinct tiers step down through a mossy, fern-draped canyon, with the main drop plunging over a rock ledge into a pool before continuing down two additional cascades. The surrounding old-growth forest of Douglas fir and canyon oak creates a cathedral-like setting.

The James K. Carr Trail is a moderately strenuous 3.4-mile round-trip path that follows old logging routes through dense forest to the falls. The trail gains about 700 feet of elevation, with the steepest section near the end as you descend to the viewing area. Several bridges and a boardwalk section keep hikers above the creek and muddy areas. The viewing platform at the base of the lower tier provides excellent photo opportunities, though the full height of all three tiers is best appreciated from a distance.

Spring and early summer offer the best flow, typically from March through June. The falls run year-round but diminish to a trickle by late summer. Dogs are welcome on leash, making this a popular choice for dog owners. The trailhead has limited parking, so arrive early on weekends. Whiskeytown National Recreation Area charges a $25 weekly vehicle pass or $10 daily pass.
