Three Sisters Falls
San Diego County, California
About This Waterfall
Three Sisters Falls is a stunning 150-foot triple-tiered waterfall wedged between tall, rocky canyon walls in the Cleveland National Forest near Julian. The three distinct drops — approximately 30 feet, 50 feet, and 20-30 feet — cascade over granite ledges into pools connected by chutes and slides, creating a natural water park in the rugged San Diego backcountry. When flowing strong after winter rains, the combined effect of all three tiers is dramatic, and the narrow canyon amplifies the sound of falling water into a resonant roar.
The trail to Three Sisters Falls covers about 4.2 miles round trip with roughly 1,000 feet of elevation change, most of it concentrated in a steep, rocky descent into the canyon. The hike is deceptively challenging — while the walk in is mostly downhill, the return trip is a demanding uphill climb that catches many hikers off guard, especially in hot weather. The trail passes through several ecosystems, from chaparral and oak woodland to the riparian canyon bottom. Some sections require scrambling over boulders.
The falls are seasonal, flowing best from December through April after good winter rains. Summer visits are not recommended due to extreme heat in the canyon, which can exceed 100 degrees. The trailhead is accessible via the Cha'chaany Hamuk Trailhead. Start early in the morning to avoid afternoon heat, and carry at least 3 liters of water per person. The return climb is no joke — allow more time than you think you'll need.
