Switzer Falls
Los Angeles County, California
About This Waterfall
Switzer Falls is a popular two-tiered waterfall tucked into the scenic Arroyo Seco Canyon in the Angeles National Forest, just 30 minutes from downtown Los Angeles. Upper Switzer Falls drops about 40 feet while the lower falls cascade 25 feet into a sweet swimming hole framed by polished granite. The canyon is a narrow, shaded corridor lined with oaks and alders, where the stream pours over granite into mirror-like pools. The contrast between the chaparral-covered mountainsides above and the lush, green riparian canyon below is striking.
The Gabrielino Trail to Switzer Falls covers 3.6 miles round trip with about 685 feet of elevation gain, meandering back and forth across the creek through the spectacular Arroyo Seco Canyon. Halfway along the hike, you pass the remains of Switzer Trail Camp, established in 1884 by a Pasadena carpenter. The trail travels high above the 50-foot upper falls before dropping back to the stream, where hikers can scramble upstream to stand at the base. The creek crossings add a fun element, especially for kids.
Winter and spring (December through May) offer the best water flow after seasonal rains. The swimming hole at the lower falls is popular in summer, though water levels drop considerably. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking at the Switzer Picnic Area. The access road is Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2), about 10 miles from La Canada Flintridge. Dogs are permitted on leash. Arrive early on weekends as the picnic area parking fills quickly.
Trail Information
Warning: Multiple creek crossings can be tricky after heavy rain. Poison oak is abundant along the trail margins. Flash floods are possible during rain events — do not enter the canyon during or shortly after storms.
