Sturtevant Falls
Los Angeles County, California
About This Waterfall
Sturtevant Falls is a magnificent 50-foot waterfall that cascades into a circular pool ringed by giant boulders in the heart of Santa Anita Canyon in the Angeles National Forest. The falls have been a beloved hiking destination since the late 1800s, when resort cabins dotted the canyon. Today, a handful of historic cabins still stand along the trail, adding a touch of mountain history to the experience. The waterfall drops over a broad rock face into a shallow pool, creating a refreshing oasis in the otherwise dry San Gabriel Mountains.
The Sturtevant Falls Trail is a 3.3-mile round trip from Chantry Flat with about 680 feet of elevation gain, following Santa Anita Creek through a shaded canyon of alder, oak, and bay laurel. The trail descends from the parking area into the canyon, passing the historic cabins and several small cascades before reaching the main falls. The return trip is uphill the entire way, which makes the hike moderately challenging despite the short distance. Stream crossings are frequent and may require rock-hopping during wet periods.
The falls flow best from December through May following winter rains, though some water usually flows year-round. A National Forest Adventure Pass is required for parking at Chantry Flat. The parking lot is small and fills very early on weekends — arrive before 8 AM or you may be turned away. Note that as of early 2025, the trail may be affected by the Eaton Fire; check Angeles National Forest for current conditions before visiting.
Trail Information
Warning: Stream crossings can be difficult after heavy rain. Poison oak is present along the trail. Check current trail status as fire damage may affect access. The return hike is entirely uphill.
