Nojoqui Falls
Santa Barbara County, California
About This Waterfall
Nojoqui Falls is an 80-foot waterfall that cascades over a moss-and-fern-covered cliff face in a shaded grotto in Santa Barbara County, creating a lush, grotto-like scene that feels distinctly out of place in the otherwise dry Southern California landscape. The water spreads across the broad rock face in a delicate curtain, keeping the surrounding vegetation perpetually green and dripping. The Chumash people considered this a sacred site, and the name Nojoqui comes from a Chumash word. The falls have a timeless, enchanted quality that makes them one of the most photogenic waterfalls in the region.
The trail to Nojoqui Falls is a very easy 0.9-mile round trip with just 216 feet of elevation gain through an old forest of coast live oaks and California bay laurels. Wooden bridges cross the creek at several points, and the well-maintained dirt trail arrives at a stone viewing platform at the base of the falls. The entire walk takes about 10-15 minutes each way, making this one of the easiest waterfall hikes in California. The shaded forest canopy keeps the trail cool even on warm days.
The falls flow best during and shortly after the rainy season, from December through April. In dry years, the flow may be reduced to a mist or stop entirely by summer. The park is free to enter and open daily from 8 AM to sunset. Dogs are welcome on leash. The easy access and short trail make this an excellent choice for families with young children or anyone looking for a quick waterfall fix. The park includes picnic tables and restrooms at the parking area.
