McArthur-Burney Falls

About This Waterfall

McArthur-Burney Falls is a 129-foot spring-fed waterfall that President Theodore Roosevelt reportedly called the eighth wonder of the world. Unlike most waterfalls that depend on seasonal rainfall, Burney Falls flows at a constant 100 million gallons per day year-round, fed by an underground reservoir that percolates through layers of porous volcanic basalt. Water emerges from the rock face at countless points, creating a lush curtain of secondary falls flanking the main cascade. The result is a waterfall that looks like something from a fantasy film, with ferns, moss, and mist coating every surface in vivid green.

The Falls Loop Trail is an easy 1.1-mile loop that descends from the overlook at the top to the base of the falls, crosses Burney Creek on Rainbow Footbridge, and returns along the opposite bank via Fisherman's Bridge. The descent is moderate with well-maintained steps and railings. The overlook at the top provides a dramatic first view of the entire falls, while the base offers a more immersive experience with cool mist and the thundering sound of water. The Pacific Crest Trail also passes through the park.

Visit any time of year, as the spring-fed flow remains constant regardless of season. However, summer and early fall offer the warmest weather and the most comfortable hiking conditions. The park has a small campground that fills quickly in summer. Arrive early on summer weekends as the parking area fills by mid-morning. A $10 day-use parking fee applies.
