Horsetail Fall
Mariposa County, California
About This Waterfall
Horsetail Fall drops approximately 1,000 feet off the east face of El Capitan and is most famous for the natural Firefall phenomenon that occurs in mid-to-late February. When conditions align perfectly — enough snowmelt to feed the fall, clear skies at sunset, and the sun at just the right angle — the last rays of sunlight illuminate the falling water, transforming it into a glowing ribbon of orange and red that looks like molten lava pouring down the cliff face. For roughly ten minutes, the granite giant appears to bleed fire.
There is no trail to the base of Horsetail Fall. The best viewing areas are along Northside Drive, approximately 1.5 miles east of El Capitan Picnic Area. During the February Firefall season, the park designates specific viewing areas and manages crowds carefully. The walk from the Yosemite Falls parking lot to the viewing areas is about 1.5 miles. Outside of Firefall season, the fall can be seen from various points along the Valley floor.
The Firefall window typically runs from February 10 through February 26, with sunset illumination lasting about 10 minutes each evening. The fall requires snowmelt to flow, so warm daytime temperatures are essential. No reservations are required for Firefall viewing as of 2026. Outside of February, Horsetail Fall is a seasonal waterfall that typically dries up by early summer. Arrive at least an hour before sunset during Firefall season to secure a viewing spot.
Trail Information
Warning: During Firefall season, crowds can be extreme. Dress warmly as temperatures drop rapidly after sunset. The fall is seasonal and may not be flowing even in February if conditions are too cold.
