Escondido Falls

About This Waterfall

Escondido Falls is the tallest waterfall in the Santa Monica Mountains, with the upper tier plunging 150 feet down a dramatic limestone cliff face draped in ferns and moss. The lower tier, a more accessible 40-50 foot cascade, is the end point for public hiking, dropping into a rocky grotto that feels worlds away from the Malibu coast just a couple of miles to the south. The travertine limestone formations surrounding the falls are unique in the Santa Monica Mountains, creating terraced pools and mineral deposits that shimmer in the filtered light.

The trail to the lower falls covers 3.5 miles round trip through Escondido Canyon Natural Area with about 475 feet of elevation gain. The first 0.8 miles follows a paved road with a dirt sidewalk before the actual trail begins, winding through oak woodland, riparian areas, and coastal sage scrub. The canyon narrows as you approach the falls, and the sound of cascading water builds anticipation. The trail is well-maintained and moderately easy, making it one of the most accessible coastal waterfall hikes in Southern California.

The falls flow best during and after the rainy season, from December through April. In dry years, the flow can be minimal or absent by summer. The public parkland ends at the lower falls — climbing to the upper falls is prohibited to protect the fragile habitat and to prevent injuries from the unstable cliff faces. Parking at the Winding Way trailhead costs $12. Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds, especially during the rainy season when the falls are at their best.
