Eaton Canyon Falls
Los Angeles County, California
About This Waterfall
Eaton Canyon Falls is a striking 40-foot waterfall nestled in a narrow gorge in the San Gabriel Mountains, just minutes from downtown Pasadena. The waterfall plunges over a rocky cliff face into a shallow pool surrounded by steep canyon walls, creating an intimate amphitheater of rock and water. The accessibility and proximity to millions of Los Angeles residents makes this one of the most popular waterfall hikes in all of Southern California. Despite the urban surroundings, once inside the canyon, the towering walls and rushing water create a genuine sense of wilderness escape.
The trail from the Eaton Canyon Nature Center covers 3.6 miles round trip with about 436 feet of elevation gain. The path follows a wide fire road before narrowing to a single track that winds up the canyon alongside the creek. Multiple stream crossings add variety and adventure, especially after rain when the creek runs strong. The canyon walls close in as you approach the falls, building anticipation for the final reveal. The trail is rocky and uneven in places but manageable for most hikers with sturdy footwear.
Winter and spring (December through May) deliver the best water flow after seasonal rains. The nature center is a 190-acre preserve with free parking and educational exhibits about the local ecosystem. Note that Eaton Canyon was severely impacted by the 2025 Eaton Fire, and the trail is currently closed until December 2027 for ecological recovery. Check the LA County Parks website for reopening updates before planning your visit.
