Carlon Falls
Tuolumne County, California
About This Waterfall
Carlon Falls is a charming 35-foot cascade on the South Fork of the Tuolumne River, tucked into a forested canyon near the western boundary of Yosemite National Park. The waterfall drops over a granite ledge into a deep, clear pool that serves as one of Yosemite's best-kept swimming holes. Surrounded by old-growth pines and moss-covered boulders, the setting feels intimate and secluded compared to the Valley's more famous falls. The water fans out across the rock face, creating a curtain effect that is particularly photogenic.
The 2.9-mile round-trip trail follows the south bank of the Tuolumne River through a peaceful pine and oak forest, with the sound of rushing water as a constant companion. The path is mostly level with just 170 feet of elevation gain, making it one of the easiest waterfall hikes in the Yosemite area. A short, steep scramble near the end leads to the base of the falls and the swimming hole. The trail is well-shaded and pleasant even on warm days.
The trailhead sits outside the park boundary, so no park entrance fee is required to access the trail, though the falls themselves are within park limits. Dogs are not allowed past the park boundary. Late May through September is ideal for swimming after spring runoff subsides. In early spring, the falls run strong but the water is frigid. This is an excellent choice for families or anyone looking for a mellower Yosemite waterfall experience.
Trail Information
Warning: The final approach to the base of the falls involves a short scramble on rocks. Use caution on wet surfaces. Dogs are not allowed past the national park boundary.
