Berry Creek Falls
Santa Cruz County, California
About This Waterfall
Berry Creek Falls is a stunning 70-foot waterfall surrounded by towering old-growth coast redwoods in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California's oldest state park. The waterfall drops over a fern-covered cliff into a grotto-like basin, with spray keeping the surrounding mosses and five-finger ferns perpetually lush and green. The setting is pure Pacific coastal magic — ancient trees, filtered light, and the sound of water echoing through the canyon. It's often called the most beautiful waterfall in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The Berry Creek Falls Loop is a strenuous 10-mile loop with about 2,300 feet of elevation gain through pristine old-growth redwood forest. The trail passes through some of the park's most impressive groves, crosses creek after creek on wooden bridges, and visits two additional waterfalls: Silver Falls and Golden Cascade Falls. The descent to Berry Creek Falls is steep, and the return climb is the most challenging section. Giant ferns, banana slugs, and the rich forest ecosystem make this hike about much more than just the destination.
Winter and early spring (January through March) offer the best water flow, though the trail can be muddy. Spring wildflower blooms add color to the forest understory. Note that the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire severely damaged the park, and access to the waterfalls has been restricted during ongoing recovery. Check the park website for current trail conditions before planning your visit.
